When I was a kid, I was thrilled to stay with an elegant lady (friend of my mother) who had no children. In her effort to scrub me clean, she accidentally scalded me. So, if water is hot enough, it does burn! Or it could be not acidic, but highly alkaline. That burns, too.

And thanks for your thoughts on the burning water -- i am forever missing the obvious and either of those would work. Interesting timing on your comment also as my characters are about to approach the river of "burning water" in question...
